I have been on a massive dark and malty beer kick over the last month. Part of it is the season, I feel like these beers are perfect for cold winter nights, and we’ve had a few of those recently. Part of it is hop burnout, I drank too much IPA in 2018 and I need to give my palate more frequent breaks from the big hop flavors. Another factor is one of my beer goals for the new year, trying to lower the total number of bottles in my beer cellar (which are mostly dark and malty beers). Fortunately there are many awesome stouts, poters, barleywines and quadrupels available for dark beer fans this time of year, and I’ve had a few stellar ones that were recommended to me recently. One is definitely Dynasty, a big imperial stout from Night Shift. While many breweries are pushing sugar-bomb pastry stouts or loading every ounce into bourbon barrels (which can both produce delicious beers), it is nice to see Night Shift roll out a imperial stout with no adjuncts or barrel aging, just big malt flavors. Night Shift Dynasty is available now on draft and in 16 oz cans.
Night Shift Dynasty pours pitch black with a solid tan head. The aroma is rich with dark roasted malts. The malts also dominate the flavor, hints of cocoa, espresso and toffee along with a touch of booze. This is balanced by noticeable hoppiness, earthy and herbal along with some late bitterness. Dynasty has a full body and goes down pretty easy for a beer with 10.6% ABV. The finish is rich with some lingering malt flavors and just a hint of warming alcohol. This is a great imperial stout, tons of richness and full flavor without needing any additions of pastry, adjuncts or bourbon barrels. Another fantastic addition to the Night Shift lineup.
