Jack’s Abby Private Rye

I recently completed a brewery profile of Jack’s Abby and Springdale for The Full Pint. In these profiles I try to cover a bit about the history of a brewery, what they do to set themselves apart, what they are planning moving forward, and my favorite beers from the profiled brewery. I keep pretty good tabs on the local beer scene, so I have a lot of this information available, but it really helps to chat with someone from the brewery as part of the process, especially when I am discussing the brewery’s plans moving forward. Everyone at Jack’s Abby was incredibly helpful in this process, Kat from their PR team set things up and showed me around, Matt greeted my and chatted for a few minutes, and then co-owner Sam Hendler took a significant amount of time out of his schedule for an interview, so I wanted to pass along a huge thanks to all of them. One of the projects that the team at Jack’s Abby is very excited about is their Kellerbier series, a rotating cycle of unfiltered lagers brewed using traditional techniques. Each Kellerbier is brewed with a decoction mash, lagered and naturally fermented before packaging. These beers vary widely in style, a few are old classics while most are entirely new recipes. One of the most recent releases of the Kellerbier series is Private Rye, a rye lager brewed with local danko rye malt. Jack’s Abby Private Rye is available on a rotating basis on draft and in 16 oz cans.

Jacks Abby Private RyeJack’s Abby Private Rye pours slightly hazy deep orange with a solid white head. The aroma is mild, some floral hops and rich malts. The malt leads the flavor, hints of biscuit, honey and rye bread. This is complemented by the noble hops which add notes of herbs and cut grass along with a mild bitterness in the finish. Private Rye is a clean and easy drinking lager, and not too boozy at 5.7% ABV. The finish is crisp with just a hint of lingering malt and hop flavor. Private Rye is another quality release from Jack’s Abby, tons of flavor, but smooth and easy to drink. Looking forward to trying the rest of the releases in the Kellerbier series! Hoppy Boston score: 4.25/5.
