When I published my picks of 16 Massachusetts breweries that make spectacular beer but fly a little under the radar (link leads to the article, check it out when you get a chance!) I mentioned that one of the things I loved about Medusa Brewing Company in Hudson was their style diversity. When you visit Medusa you can expect to find a wide range of beers, including some underappreciated styles. This is a breath of fresh air in a craft beer culture that is obsessed with a couple of hot styles at the expense of everything else. Their canning runs tend to be a little more hop-focused, which I understand. IPAs sell quickly while other styles are a little more niche. I was able to find cans of something a little different recently, Medusa Bad Omen, a Belgian style pale ale brewed with cherries and raspberries. Medusa Bad Omen is available on a rotating basis on draft and in 16 oz cans.
Medusa Bad Omen pours clear light red with a small white head. The aroma features some fruity notes and estery yeast. The Belgian style yeast leads the flavor, hints of apple, bubblegum, and peppercorn. The fruit provides a nice complement, touches of cherry and raspberry, present but not overwhelming. The flavor is rounded out with some mild bready malt and just a touch of earthy hops. Bad Omen is light and very easy drinking but packs some punch at 7.5% ABV. The finish is crisp and slightly tart with some subtle sweet fruit lingering on the tongue. This is a very nice beer, a good mix of expressive yeast and fruit flavors. Hoppy Boston score: 4.25/5.
