I am a huge nerd, and not just when it comes to beer. I am also a science nerd (the PhD in medicinal chemistry will do that), plus I love video games, everything Star Wars, and epic fantasy novels. One of the reasons I started writing Hoppy Boston was to get my non-science writing chops back so I could start writing my own epic fantasy novel/series. Nearly 7 years in, Hoppy Boston is still going strong and I have made zero progress on the book aside from a few general ideas and characters I am kicking around in my head. I even fell behind in my reading for a while, but then I found Audible which has revolutionized my commute and reinvigorated my love for epic fantasy. I have even been toying with the idea of a second blog where I write about my favorite series, but I just don’t have the time right now. All of this is a long way to say that when a local brewery releases a new beer with an awesome epic fantasy reference you know I will be in. Needless to say, I was definitely trying In The Darkness Bind Them, Mayflower’s new imperial stout brewed with coffee, vanilla, and cocoa and featuring an excellent Lord of the Rings reference in the title. Mayflower In the Darkness Bind Them is available on a rotating basis on draft (well, probably not right now) and in 16 oz cans.
Mayflower In The Darkness Bind Them pours deep brown with a mild tan head. The aroma features some roasted malt and coffee. The flavor is malt forward, notes of chocolate, molasses, and caramel. The adjuncts complement the malt well, hints of coffee, cocoa and a little sweetness from the lactose. There is minimal hop flavor, just a touch of late bitter balance. In The Darkness Bind Them is medium-bodied and drinks pretty easy for 9% ABV. The finish is rich with some lingering flavor from the malt and the adjuncts. This is a delicious stout, well balanced and loads of flavor. I could even say that this beer is…precious to me :). Hoppy Boston score: 4.5/5.
