Allagash Farm To Face

A few years ago a friend of mine sent a text saying they had just tried the best beer ever, a sour ale brewed with peaches called Farm To Face from Allagash Brewing Company. I get beer recommendations all the time, but it is rare that they come with a “favorite beer ever” label, so I made a substantial effort to find a bottle. Unfortunately I came up empty, a limited amount of the beer has been distributed and it sold out quickly. The next couple years were similar, the beer was either released as brewery only or the limited amount that made it to Massachusetts sold out before I could find it. One year Allagash had to skip the release all together because of a poor peach crop in Maine. Allagash was clearly aware of the beers popularity and made an effort to scale up the annual release, and this year a substantial amount made it south and I actually got a bottle of Farm To Face! Allagash Farm To Face is brewed as a pale ale that is fermented in stainless steel tanks with house yeast. It is then aged with Pediococcus, Lactobacillus and a ton of peaches. It is available once a year on draft and in 375 mL bottles.

Allagash Farm to FaceAllagash Farm To Face pours clear deep yellow with a solid white head. The aroma features a ton of peach along with a little acidity. The flavors imparted by the fermentation and aging take center stage, solid peach flavor along with notes of white grape and sour apple. This beer is tart but not mouth puckering, a good middle ground that would please fans of sour beer and people who are still finding their way with sour styles. A mild malt backbone adds touches of whole grain bread and cereal, and there is minimal hop flavor. Farm To Face is light bodied, refreshing and not overly boozy at 6.1% ABV. The finish is crisp and a little tart with a mild aftertaste. Farm To Face is another very good beer from Allagash, their barrel aged/sour program is as good as any in the world. Hoppy Boston score: 4.5/5.
