Maine Beer Co. Fall

Of all of the amazing breweries in the great state of Maine the one I visit the most is probably Maine Beer Company in Freeport. Other breweries might be more trendy, or have new beer releases every week that generate buzz on social media, but Maine Beer Company makes consistently great beer. Every recipe has clearly been tested and perfected before it is introduced the public. The best descriptor I’ve seen applied to their beers is “precise”, other beers might be more bold or over the top, but every ingredient in a MBC beer has been added for a particular reason, and every recipe has been fine tuned. Beer blogger extraordinaire Beervana had a great write-up of his recent trip to Maine Beer Company, and it really reminded me why, with all of the options in Maine, I keep going back. Nothing makes me feel like I am on a Maine vacation like sitting at my family home on the lake and opening a bottle of Lunch or Mo. On the way up to our family Thanksgiving I stopped at the brewery and grabbed a variety of bottles including a new release. Fall is a coffee stout brewed with cold brew from Coffee By Design. It is available in the fall in the immediately recognizable Maine Beer Co. 16.9 oz bottles.

Maine Beer Co FallMaine Beer Co. Fall pours pitch black with a solid tan head. The aroma is loaded with roasted malt and a bit of coffee. The malts lead the flavor, notes of mocha, caramel and dark chocolate. The coffee is present but not overpowering, a nice complement to the roasted malt flavors. There is a touch of earthy hops for balance. Fall is medium bodied and very smooth, not too boozy at 5.6% ABV. The finish has a mixture of malt flavor and a little bitterness, kind of like a cup of rich coffee. This is a very well crafted coffee stout, I hope it becomes a regular fall release. Hoppy Boston score: 4.5/5.
