Mayflower Otto Bahn

When it comes to certain beer styles I’ve always been a seasonal drinker. I don’t have hard and fast rules, but if I’m drinking an imperial stout it is probably cold outside and brown ales are perfect for a crisp fall day. Pale lagers can work with any season, but my consumption of pilsners and Helles lagers definitely peaks in the summer. You probably wouldn’t know it from the recent Hoppy Boston reviews, I’ve been on way too heavy of an IPA kick right now, especially in my writing, and I feel like I missed out on peak lager review season. I am going to try to make up for it a bit in the next few weeks, and knock out a few extra reviews of light bodied, easy drinking and full flavored lagers. There is clearly demand for these styles, it seems like every brewery with the capacity is putting out a pale lager as a complement to the hop-bomb IPAs and boozy stouts that still rule many taplists. A good example is Otto Bahn, the new Helles Lager from Mayflower Brewing Company. Like many popular beers, Otto Bahn is named after the brewers dog. Mayflower Otto Bahn is available on a rotating basis on draft and in 16 oz cans.

Mayflower Otto BahnMayflower Otto Bahn pours crystal clear light yellow with a solid white head. The aroma features some floral hops and some light malts. Otto Bahn is a balanced, easy drinking and sessionable lager (5% ABV). The old world hops add notes of cut grass, herbs, cedar and some bite at the end. The malt adds touches of bread crust and biscuits. Otto Bahn finishes crisp, clean and dry, a refreshing lager. This is a great summer beer, full flavored but it goes down very easy, perfect for the last few warm weeks of summer! Hoppy Boston score: 4.5/5.
