I make 3-4 trips a year up to Maine, usually centered around visits with family in the mid-coast region. While the family needs take precedence over everything else I usually try to work in some beer related fun, usually stops at breweries or restaurants with good beer selections, or even just a quick trip into a bottle shop to grab some beers that I can’t find in the Boston area. My last trip was in June and I was hoping to stop at Lone Pine on the way home, I had been introduced to their beers the year before and really enjoyed them. Unfortunately the stop didn’t work out, the perils of traveling with young children is that stops can be unpredictable and the priority needs to be getting everyone to the destination as quickly and painlessly as possible (so you sure as hell don’t stop the car when both kids are napping peacefully). So I missed out on Lone Pine on that trip but I was in luck, very soon afterwards the brewery announced plans to expand distribution into Massachusetts. By mid-July many Lone Pine favorites were popping up on local shelves and taplists. I was able to grab a variety from my local bottle shop including some cans of Tessellation, Lone Pine’s Double IPA hopped exclusively with Mosaic. Lone Pine Tessellation is available year-round on draft and in 16 oz. cans.
Lone Pine Tessellation pours slightly hazy light yellow with a solid white head. The aroma features a big burst of fruity hops. The flavor is also very hop forward, notes of mango, papaya, grapefruit and tangerine along with a hint of bitterness at the end. This is balanced by some light malts, touches of crackers and bread crust. Tessellation is medium bodied and very drinkable for a double IPA, but definitely packs some punch at 8.1% ABV. The finish is crisp with plenty of lingering hop flavor and the faintest hint of boozy sweetness. This is another very nice hoppy beer from Lone Pine, it’s great to see their beers in Boston so I can drink them on a regular basis! Hoppy Boston score: 4.5/5.
