The Bruery Saison de Lente

The Bruery in Placentia, CA is quickly becoming one of the most popular craft breweries in the United States. The name “Bruery” is a fusion between the word brewery and founder Patrick Rue’s surname. Their specialty is experimental and barrel aged beers, styles that are sought after by many craft beer connoisseurs. They recently won the People’s Choice Brewery Award at the Firestone Walker Invitational Brewfest. The Bruery’s Spring seasonal is Saison de Lente, a light and hoppy saison brewed with Brettanomyces. Brettanomyces is a wild yeast strain, often intentionally added to beers to give a rustic flavor that nicely complements the spice and fruit from the more traditional Belgian yeasts. Saison de Lente is available in 750 mL bottles in MA.

The Bruery Saison de LenteThe Bruery Saison de Lente pours a straw gold, slightly hazy with a massive white head. The smell is all Belgian yeast, led by spice and must. The yeast leads the flavor as well, pepper, apple and a little barnyard/horse-blanket flavor from the wild yeast. There is a solid malt backbone, touches of cracker and wheat bread. The hops add some earthy and woodsy notes without much bitterness. The beer is light and easy to drink, with a pretty typical for the style 6.5% ABV. The finish is quite clean and dry with a little spice and funk lingering on the tongue. This is a very nice Spring/Summer beer, drinkable but complex and flavorful. Hoppy Boston score: 4.5/5.
