Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA

Weyerbacher Brewing Company of Easton, PA was founded in 1995 by Dan and Sue Wierback. Weyerbacher is the original German spelling and pronunciation of their family name, and thus was the perfect name for their beer. Their initial plan to focus on traditional beer styles went out the window with the development of their Raspberry Imperial Stout. Now they brew a series or year-round, seasonal, and specialty beers ranging from traditional recipes to exotic and experimental styles. One of Weyerbacher’s current flagship year-round beers is called Last Chance IPA. While many breweries support charitable foundations, Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA is a beer brewed for a specific cause. A portion of the proceeds from all sales go towards local animal shelters. Last Chance IPA is brewed with an amazing selection of American hop varieties; Centennial, Cascade, Simcoe and Columbus. These are some of my favorite hops to brew with, so I was excited to give the beer a try.

Weyerbacher Last Chance IPAWeyerbacher Last Chance IPA pours a clear amber with a small white head. The smell is hop-forward, with solid pine and floral scents and a touch of citrus. The taste is somewhat hoppy, with resin and spice followed by some earthy notes. There are also very solid malt flavors, touches of caramel and whole grain bread. The mouthfeel is light and not very bitter for an IPA, the hops add more to the flavor and aroma than bitterness. It is listed at 62 IBUs, which is slightly on the low side for an IPA, and I would have guessed even lower. Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA is easy to drink and at 5.9% ABV has pretty moderate alcohol. The beer finishes pretty clean, a touch of hops and grain in the aftertaste. Overall a solid IPA, especially if you prefer a less assertive version of the style. Plus, buying this beer supports a good cause. Hoppy Boston score: 3.75/5.
